Unity of the Valley: About Us
Basic Beliefs
- God is absolute good, everywhere present.
- We have a spark of divinity within. Our very essence is of God and we are therefore inherently good.
- We create our experiences by the activity of our minds. Everything has its beginning in thought.
- Prayer is creative thinking that heightens the connection with God-Mind and therefore brings forth the wisdom, healing prosperity - everything good.
- Knowing and understanding the Laws of Life, also called TRUTH, are not enough. We must live the Truth we know.
Mission Statement
We are a growing spiritual community that provides the freedom to acknowledge and express our indwelling Christ spirit and are dedicated to the Universal Principles of Love, Peace, and Oneness.
Vision
We are a Spirit-led, dynamic community committed to co-creating an awakened world where all people feel empowered to fulfill their divine role in this abundant Universe.
Core Values:
- Prayer enhances our awareness of our oneness with Divine Spirit.
- We follow the teachings of Jesus, our Wayshower, in our everyday lives.
- Our teaching of Unity principles and Universal truths provides an environment for learning, self discovery, and spiritual growth for adults and youth of all ages.
- We are the spirit of God expressed and we are blessed by an abundant world as we lovingly share the gifts of God.
- We recognize that all people are expressions of God and are honored with unconditional love and acceptance.
History of Unity of the Valley
In 1990, Audrey Peterson, as a Licensed Unity Teacher, was given the assignment of establishing a Unity ministry south of the Minnesota River. Janet Benson, assisted Audrey in this endeavor. The first meeting was held in the back of Denny's restaurant in Burnsville on February 19, 1990. A search for a more quiet location resulted in a move to the basement of Richfield Bank in Burnsville.
On May 5, 1991, the group moved to Children's World Learning Center in Burnsville in order to accommodate the youngsters. Janet left in 1991 and Cheryl Maloney became the part-time assistant.
The group quickly outgrew space at Children's World and in November 1992, moved to the Burnsville City Hall. By this time, the average attendance had increased to over 20 adults and Sunday School averaged six children.
Cheryl left in the summer of 1993 and Nita Wolf joined the spiritual staff as a Certified Family Educator. Tired of doing "Church in a Box," in December of 1993, the group stepped out on their own and rented office space in Apple Valley. The additional space allowed for a nursery and a bookstore. With the group continuing to grow, a Steering Committee was formed and an office assistant was hired.
Again, this space became too small and proved to be inadequate for the growing number of children, so an office and warehouse space was rented in Burnsville to start the new year of 1996. Even though this space was larger, it became a goal of the congregation to own their own building. This became a reality in the spring of 2001, when the building at 4011 West Highway 13, in Savage, was purchased and the congregation moved into their new home on March 25, 2001. A well-established program now included the Y.O.U., Uniteens, Rainbow Circles, a large bookstore, an office secretary and a bookkeeper.
The growth of the congregation and addition and expansion of programs for adults, youth and children continues. For all that has been - thank you! To all the blessings that shall be - yes!
